So, 2011 had a record number of enacted abortion restrictions in the United States, but according to the Guttmacher Institute, we’re most likely in for another hefty blow in 2012. In the first half of this year, states have already enacted 39 abortion restrictions (small compared to last year’s 80 by this time, but very big compared to years prior to 2011). This also affect a very high percentage of the country’s reproductive age women, 55% of whom reside in one of the 26 states labeled as “hostile” towards abortion.
Once you’ve had your moment of silence for human decency/reproductive health/the general direction of the country, let’s all also remember the very convincing evidence to support the argument that countries which enact greater restrictions on abortion and access to reproductive healthcare have, uh, way higher abortion rates and those abortions are far more dangerous.
Check out Guttmacher’s findings on the legislative status of reproductive health this far into 2012.
